Whoops, time flies.
Sorry for not posting for a while. No excuse really.
This post’s topic is food inspiring greatness in kids.
My family’s zest for eating unique foods has been passed on to me and now, it seems… to my children 🙂
I must say that our biggest motivation for travelling is not to find the latest fashions. Food is high up there on our list, driving our family to explore corners in different cities and countries. We love fine gourmet creations but also crazy for off-the-street “treasures.”
This love affair with food also inspires us to spend hours planning and in the kitchen as a family to figure out heartwarming daily meals, birthday breakfasts, funky snacks, decoration techniques etc. etc.
In our experience, food really does inspire kids to greatness as they get to hone their
1. Organizational skills.
The kids get accustomed to planning a day (or for special occasions, a week) ahead for their upcoming meals.
2. Observation skills.
They alert me when certain ingredients are running low.
3. Curiosity & deduction.
When eating out, they want to know what sauce, what ingredients, how dishes are cooked, using what.
4. Cultural appreciation.
We really abide by “food is window to culture.” Thus, we try to vary the food we eat and have ongoing mini discussions about the cuisines. Restaurant hopping has become our favourite past time ;).
5. Math, English, Art & Science skills.
When we cook, undoubtedly all these come to play. Reading/creating recipes, preparing ingredients, understanding timing, being alert to changing of forms as we add different elements to the cooking/baking process as well as plating are superb & practical play-to-learn experiences.
Bonus for us as a family, we get to bond and create many cherished moments to inspire us to create more music, stories & movements together.
Hope you and your family get to share this love affair with food, with us. Please share your experiences with us.. we’d love to hear it 😉
